It's easy to make your own: just roll a piece of paper into a cone, pour some apple cider vinegar or put a piece of ripe banana in the bottom of a glass or jar, insert the paper cone, and wait.


(Oh yeah, and get rid of the ripe or rotten fruit that's attracting the fruit flies. You can cut off and compost any softened sections, wash the rest thoroughly, and use it. We made cobbler.)


The first time we saw one of these contraptions, we didn't know what it was. Was it an oddly misplaced piece of paper? Or a twee, delicious drink? So we made a self-explanatory version, complete with tombstone to commemorate the dear departed. You can download and print the PDF for your own use.

Fuseproject and the Mexican government have teamed up to create “See Better to Learn Better,” a free new program. Acclaimed designer Yves Béhar came up with this new collection of glasses, Collección Escolar 2010, made specifically for students. His glasses are customizable for changing fashions (and prescriptions) and they’re made of nearly-unbreakable Gilamid plastic. As part of the program, schools will offer free eye exams, and the glasses themselves, which will be produced locally in Mexico.

Animal Hoarder

It came to my attention today that a female hoarder who used to live in Houston AK is at it again in Wasilla. Approx 10 years ago I dealt with Sunny when she had a couple hundred cats in her place, most living in small cat carrier cages. No spay/neuter, so they were multiplying and she was breeding St Bernards. Took me almost a year to get something done. Luckily Houston Animal Control was just formed and was able to take care of the issue when someone out there complained. (they did do some good in their time, unlike the current issues). The Alaska Humane Society took most of her cats at that time. I recall being told the judge told Sunny if it happened again, she would end up in jail. Well, it's happening again, this time I believe with dogs. We are contacting MatSu Animal Contol in the hopes that they can do something about this. I don't believe anyone yet knows of the extent of the problem. All I know, is that by public record, there was an eviction hearing today. I hope the powers that be can catch her and stop this terrible hoarding once and for all.

Session on oil spill open to public tonight

The national commission appointed by the Obama administration to investigate the Gulf oil spill is hosting a public listening session this evening in Anchorage. The session will be hosted by William Reilly, the co-chair of the commission, and commissioner Fran Ulmer. Reilly was the federal Environmental Protection Agency administrator for President George W. Bush, and Ulmer is the chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage.


The listening session runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Room 307 of the UAA/Alaska Pacific University Consortium Library. People who want to comment about oil spill response and recovery will get four minutes to share their ideas and suggestions with the commissioners. Parking will be free in the lot east of the library.




The public is also invited to attend the commission's panel presentation from two University of Alaska fisheries experts -- economist Gunnar Knapp and marine biologist Michael Castellini. That session will run from 5 to 5:30 p.m. at the library.
